How to Mirror Your iPhone to PC
Look, I’ll be honest the first time I tried to mirror my iPhone to my Windows PC, I thought it’d be as easy as the press of a button. Spoiler alert: it definitely wasn’t. Apple and Windows are not best friends out of the box. However, after trying and failing several different methods (not to mention all the times a spinning connection icon drove me crazy) I figured out what actually works.
If you are struggling to mirror your iPhone to your PC, then this article is just for you!
Here are the methods you can try, ranked by effectiveness.
Thing is, iPhones use AirPlay, which is a streaming technology created by Apple. And, since your PC isn’t made by Apple, there’s actually a missing link. In other words, your Average Windows PC does not come with a build-in AirPlay receiver. However, the good news is, third-party apps work like a charm, and there are great free and paid ones.
This is what most iOS users try first, and in all honesty, it’s the easiest if your devices are connected to the same Wifi network.
What I used: I have tried LetsView, as it is both free and quite effective. The app allows for real-time mirroring and annotating, too, which is great. Another app you can try is AirDroid Cast: yes, it is free, links devices via Wifi, and uses AirPlay.
How it works:
For the first method it’s as simple as that: make sure that both your PC and iPhone on the same network. However, if WiFi is bad in your home, you’ll immediately notice the lag: screens freezing, video choppy. To fix that, try moving closer to a router or switch to 5GHz network if your router supports it. If it’s still happening, vanish this thought and move to the wired connection method.
Here ApowerMirror and AirDroid Cast will also supporting the statement of not utilizing your phone’s technology to its fullest. Both of them allow USB connections that not only transmit more stable but also have the lowest latency rates. This is what I’ve changed to when I needed to record my screen without any problems.
Here is how its done:
Download the application you’ll use to mirror the screen on your desktop. For the later ActivCast app it’s ApowerMirror
Why I love this method: it’s faster, takes less time to set up, more convenient and you won’t hype up your network’s CPU. Also, while mirroring it charges your phone – killing two birds with one stone.
What if you cannot visit the person you’re trying to help? Or what if you’re a sneaky visitor but has to help anyway? In this case, remote mirroring does just that: mirrors your screen even if both users are not on the same network, or even in the same city. AnyViewer does just that without jailbreaking.
Here is the bullet list for easier memorizing:
I’ve hit pretty much every error you can imagine. Here’s what worked:
Spinning icon that won’t connect? Usually means your devices aren’t on the same network, your software is outdated or there’s a firewall blocking the connection. Restart both devices, double-check your WiFi and make sure your PC’s firewall isn’t blocking the app.
Lag or freezing? Close background apps on your iPhone they eat up processing power and bandwidth. Also, if you’re trying to mirror in 4K, you’ll need at least 25 Mbps of bandwidth. Drop the resolution if your network can’t handle it.
Black screen with streaming apps? Yeah, Netflix and Hulu block screen mirroring because of copyright protection. You won’t be able to mirror them, use their built-in cast features instead.
Here’s my take:
The truth is, there’s no perfect solution. Windows and iPhone just weren’t designed to work with each other. But with the right app and method, you can get solid results. I’ve been using USB mirroring for anything important and wireless for quick, casual stuff — works like a charm.
Just pick the method that fits your situation and don’t overthink it. You’ll be mirroring in minutes.
