Initially I had assumed that they were simply ordinary watches which could get wet. As it happens, much more is happening on the inside-the-hood and some of the features literally save lives.
The thing is as follows: any serious dive watch must be waterproof with a minimum of 100 meters (10 ATM) to be certified by ISO 6425. However the majority of the modern ones reach 200-300 meters since, frankly speaking, you have to have that margin of certainty when it comes to pressure differences in water.
I took some high-tech models with specification of 300-11000 meters–yeah, steeper than the Mariana Trench. However, unless it is serious saturation diving, 200 meters is too much.
This one’s clever. Only the bezel turns counterclockwise and here is the justification; when you strike it in the process of diving, it can only make you believe you have been under the water longer than you actually have. That is much safer than believing that you have more time to live when you do not.
When you begin diving you hold the triangle marker with your minute hand and watch the time go by. Easy, but will deter the accumulation of the risky nitrogen in your blood.
This group of locking crowns are screwed down against the case. This is also really important because I have not realized how important it is until I read about pressure sealing, which simply prevents sneak attack by water which enters through winding mechanism. Before you leap and swim you twist it down, And after you likewise twist it up. Can not squeeze it in the water.
This feature was confused to me initially. It was created by Rolex way back in 1967, and it is simply a one-way valve, which allows the escaping of pressurized helium to occur in the process of decompression.
The catch? This is only necessary when you are performing saturation diving, that is, you are inside a hyperbaric chamber and need a few days or weeks. Individuals who dive regularly? Skip it. It’s overkill.
Beyond 40 meters, there is a loss of natural light. So, this is where the glow-in-the-dark material Super-Luminao comes in along with some glow-in-the-dark pens and markers and at times even the triangle at the bezel must remain visible even in the pitch of darkness.
I tried this by disabling all the lights in the night. A quality dive watch must be able to glow at a glance.
In the modern dive watches, the material of the bracelet is modified with titanium (a lightweight that is still strong), ceramic bezel (resistant to scratches), sapphire crystal (not so prone to fogging), and marine grade stainless steel. Saltwater is malicious on ordinary metals hence these materials do count in case you are in serious diving.
And this is where the interest comes in. The Huawei Watch Ultimate 2 is capable of 150 meter diving and so it comes with inbuilt sonar to send messages underwater. Apple Watch Ultra 2 is able to reach up to 40 meters and executes decompression algorithms in real-time.
So, the borders between the traditional and the computers in the area of the dive watches are becoming blurred. Smartwatches provide livedepth status and calculations of safety, just that they require re-charging. Mechanical watches? They simply work, they need no battery.
When you are only starting to dive, you need to take one that has 200-meter resistance, strong unidirectional bezel, and good lume. Such brands as Seiko Prospex or Citizen Promaster will not destroy the wallet, but will do all the expectations.
Smartwatch dive computers are truly amazing to tech lovers–only have a mechanical backup, since a battery runs out when you are at the worst time.
The biggest thing I learned? These are not only marketing features. They are the answers to the real problems underwater, and they were constructed during decades of trial and error. Either 10 meters down or simply like the appearance, now you are well aware of what is indeed happening with that rotating bezel.
