I Researched the Jiki Jiki no Mi After That Captain John Twist

I didn’t intend to be spending my Sunday night falling down a One Piece rabbit hole. And then Chapter 1163 happened, and it was revealed Captain John yup, that Captain John of the Rocks Pirates fame was the previous owner of Kid’s Devil Fruit. I had questions. A lot of them.

So, being the obsessed fan that I am I researched everything about it Jiki Jiki no Mi Here’s what I found.

What The Hell Is the Jiki Jiki no Mi?

The Jiki Jiki no Mi, also known as the Magnet-Magnet Fruit, is a Paramecia type of Devil Fruit. Whoever ingests it turns into a “magnetic human.” At the moment, it’s Eustass “Captain” Kid — one of the Worst Generation’s top power users.

The fruit looks wild, too. Several silver spheres with jagged lightning-bolt extensions wrapped in a yellow vine. Very on-brand for something that bends magnetic forces.

Kid’s been using it to wreak havoc since Sabaody. He can magnetize things to make them come to him or fly and repel metal, so most weapons in the One Piece world are essentially useless against this dude. Swords? Gone. Guns? Redirected. Cannonballs? Sent flying back at you.

But heres where shit gets interesting Kid woke this thing up before the Onigashima raid. His awaken power, “Assign,” allows him to magnetize anything. Not just metal. That could be people, rocks, buildings you name it. He demonstrated this with Big Mom when he clapped a big “S” on her noggin and made her into a magnet. That’s insane.

His special move, Punk Gibson, entails forming a giant metallic fist from garbage and using it to pummel foes. And of course there’s Damned Punk a railgun that rips magnetic projectiles in g-force heavy bursts. The physics behind it are actually not that dissimilar to real-life railgun tech, which is kind of awesome when you consider it.

It Was the Captain John Connection That Changed Everything

And here’s what really put my head through a loop: With chapter 1163, it became confirmed that Captain John did eat the Jiki Jiki no Mi during the God Valley incident. He used his magnetism to betray the Rocks Pirates and steal treasure. Classic pirate move, honestly.

His greed was his undoing fellow crew member Ganzui gunned him down. The Devil Fruit himself has returned, and after John’s death ended up in another place before finding itself inside Kid.

What’s crazy is the parallel. Both users are captains. Both are pursuing ambition and profit. They both have that sort of crazy, aggressive energy.” It’s the way that fruit seems to draw a certain personality.

This also kinda just legitimizes all of those Captain John treasure theories now doesn’t it. Kid’s whole journey may in fact be incestuously linked to his predecessor’s legacy without him even being the wiser. It’s the kind of multilayered storytelling that Oda excels at.

What This Might Mean for Kid’s Future

We don’t know what happened to Kid since being defeated by Shanks in Chapter 1079. The message read that his men had “suffered a crushing defeat” but we never saw any corpse. In One Piece it almost certainly entails someone is returning to help.

The Captain John reveal is too deliberate feeling to be throwaway lore. There are already theories on how Kid will escape and return later in Elbaf or Final War, whether he becomes stronger upon training or character developmet.

There’s also the dormant potential of the Jiki Jiki no Mi itself. Magnetism & electricity are related through electromagnetism. Kid already makes purple electricity sparks when he uses his abilities. Would he be able to get back to full control and manipulation in the electrical realm? That would put him in another universe.

Some fans go so far as to speculate he might one day be able to bend iron up his opponent’s blood, control electromagnetic pulses or interfere with the magnetic fields of planets. Its ceiling is stupidly high with Kid at the helm.

Final Thoughts

The Jiki Jiki no Mi went from “cool magnetic powers” to “this is a very historically important Devil Fruit and it’s going to mean something for the story moving forward” in just one chapter. The connection to Captain John adds layers to Kid’s story, and suggests that his arc might not be over.

What form Kid’s reappearance will take ally, foe or something else entirely remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: Oda has been playing a long game with this fruit’s legacy. And honestly? I’m here for it.

FAQs

Who possessed the Jiki Jiki when Kid was not the user of it?

John the captain of Rocks Pirates. Chapter 1163 revealed that he exploited magnetic abilities during the God Valley incident to betray his crew and take treasure. It was eaten by another Rocks Pirate, Ganzui, and the fruit eventually returned for Kid to find it.

So, can Kid use his Devil’s fruit to control (non-metallic) objects?

Yes, but only after awakening. Prior to awakening, Kid could only manipulate ferromagnetic materials. His Action is “Assign”, which magnetically charges any object on the board, and even living creatures (he gives a person or thing North or South polarity). This essentially takes the commodity’s most crucial limitation off of it.

What happened to Kid after Shanks wrecked him?

Kid’s fate is unclear. As for Kid, Shanks used Divine Departure to crush his ship, the only thing we saw was hostage less body off screen. In One Piece, survival usually means everyone else is in trouble. A lot of fans speculate he’ll come back during Elbaf or the Final War, perhaps having become even stronger following this humiliating defeat.
