I tell you, I was not convinced at first, when I heard that Jujutsu Kaisen was getting a spin-off about an alien. After having followed the first eight chapters and plunging into Chapter 9, I understand.
This is not merely a sci-fi excursion. It is a tale of what can transpire when the whole picture of the world is shaken upside down.
The Setup You Can’t Skip
The following is the gimmick, Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo is set in 2086, approximately 68 years since the Culling Game had ended. You are with Yuka and Tsurugi Okkotsu- the grandchildren of Yuta and Maki- that all of a sudden are required to fight with 50,000 Tonnerre Simurians attacking the planet.
These are not the common cursed spirits. They are outsiders and possess energy powers that are cursed and Grade-1 sorcerers would be considered newcomers.
If Chapter 9 does not drop bombs in the bomb section, you will not be able to grasp what the main tension is: humans believe that it is an invasion. But here Maru, and Cross, the two brothers of Simuria which we have been tracing, have nothing to conquer. They’re refugees. And in Chapter 9 we find out the reason why.
What Chapter 9 really Tells.
So, here is what happened to me upon reading it–Chapter 9 reinterprets the whole story. It is no longer about Simurians and humans. It is the story of two alien races (Rumelians and Deskunte) dismembering each other, because of the resources and how the philosophy of coexistence that one man brings turns out to be the foundation to all the things that come after it.
This chapter focuses on Dura, this Rumelian hero who happens to be the moral guiding line of the whole series. Due to some ancient tribal law, he is compelled to do a duel with the Simurian King. However, before the combat, Dura delivers this giant truth-bomb: the entire war between their tribes was not about any religion or ideology.
It was of Muru stones these cursed-energy stones buried in the Land of Rumelos this buried treasure that the Deskunte desired to possess.
Dura loses the duel. However it turns out to be the twist that made me act thus: Dabura, the man who has just killed him, chooses to fulfill the dying wish of Dura. He betray his tribe to save the rest of the Rumelians. That is when the whole color can change to not invasion story but what if coexistence can take place at all.
What the Hell Are Muru Stones?
In case you are pawing your hair at Muru stones–believe me I did at first. Just imagine that they are the nuclear-fuel counterpart of a curse. They are these rare crystals, which increase powers of Simurians to absurd levels. To enable them to have access to the Muru stones buried under Rumelian land, the Deskunte tribe created a complete religious war.
What are they so significant to the plot of Chapter 9? Dura had been hoarding them under the carpet. Following his death, the rumelian has sufficient resources to construct the spaceship that later takes Maru and Cross to Earth due to his hidden reserves. Therefore, in a nutshell, the fact that we have a story set in 2086 on Earth is because of Muru stones.
They are not merely the source of Simurian equipment–they are connected to the Simurian Third Eye, which is the organ which allows them to see reality in a different way and control cursed energy in a manner that human sorcerers cannot. In which cases is a Simurian seen to possess an active third eye and Muru stones? It is then when it gets frighteningly mighty.
Why Chapter 9 Changes Everything.
I have read posts on Reddit forums about whether to read Modulo or not. I would say no question about it, after Chapter 9. It ceases to be a cliche alien invasion of planet Earth and the narrative of how dysfunctional structures plunge decent individuals into unwanted violence.
Dura and Dabura never disliked one another, both of them were victims of tribal hierarchies who insisted on blood instead of peace. That is the philosophical side, pure Gege Akutami. It is the same phenomenon as the original series, which deals with the corruption of jujutsu society, with a new sci-fi paint.
And by the way, how powerful are these Simurians? Simurian King is defined as a Sukuna-level menace and has the ability to destroy Japan by him/herself. Giving a Grade-1 Curse User a run-down, when barely conscious, Maru made it seem as though he was taking a glass of water off. The strength of power is insane, and Chapter 9 helps us see that it is not the raw power that prevails, but the philosophy of power.
