I get it, Patch notes look impersonal, are stuffed with numbers you don’t really understand and honestly? The rest of us are just trying to figure out if our favorite gun got nerfed. So I took the recent Gearbox updates and translated them to actual human language. So here’s the stuff that you actually need to know about the patches for Borderlands 4 without all the corporate pretend speak.
The Big Picture: What Is Actually Happening
Gearbox never bothered with nerfs when Borderlands 4 launched in September. Their whole philosophy? Buff the weak stuff instead of punishing what’s working. I have been trying out weapons all over the place and it’s a damn nice change of pace. But here’s the catch that’s changing.
The creative director strew such warning in a “7 days notice” decree that effectively translated to- exploit builds are about to get the axe. If you’ve been melting bosses with an accidental combo that clearly shouldn’t work? Yeah, that’s ending soon. We’re moving from “make everything stronger” to “fix what’s broken.”
The Weapon Buffs You’ll Actually Care About
I’ve given it a try myself the October 9 update, that is and some of these changes are truly game-changing.
Ruby’s Grasp received a 50% damage increase and 25% fire rate boost. I’m not even joking when I say that this weapon transformed from “why would I use this? to “okay, this slaps now.” Hellwalker got the same treatment 30% more damage, and Hellwalker is now finally viable in endgame.
The standout? SS Even Sense got a huge 250% buff to orb damage. And when I slapped it on and shot some beefier mobs, the difference was night and day. Wild buffs to Queen’s Rest (30% spawn chance to 50%) Convergence (25% damage increase at base).
I bring this up because I think Gearbox is attempting to make every gun you carry worth carrying, not just three meta guns. That’s smart.
The Vault Hunter Balance Shuffle
Played through Amon the Forgeknight after October 2nd patch and wow. He needed it. He’d fallen further behind than the other Vault Hunters, but now? He’s finally competitive. Everyone got buffed like, literally nobody got nerfed that was crazy.
Vex’s summons and Rafa’s melee builds received fixes targeted at improving late-game survival. I ran Rafa through more difficult content and those melee tweaks really made a difference. And you’re not faceplanting nearly as much these days.
Weekly Activities: Your Farming Roadmap
Three things rotate every Thursday at 9 A.M. Pacific:
- Big Encore Boss: You know the deal, existing bosses but stronger and new loot
- Wildcard Missions : Enemy Modifier Story missions (think of them as chaos-run versions)
- Maurice’s Black Market Vending Machine : Hidden vendor which travels around weekly
Here’s the important part: if you want to farm legendaries, you should know that these rotate each week. If you miss them, you will have to wait until the rotation comes back around. Are you doing the Wildcard Missions? I usually hammer those squats out because they drop legendaires and are farmable.
The Performance Side: What Could Be Causing Your Game to Stutter
Real talk some updates have introduced performance decreases, and we’re committed to addressing that on all platforms. The 9/25 patch introduced auto-clearing of old shaders to stop degradation, which is certainly a technical way of saying your game shouldn’t run into the dirt after a few hours.
That said, recent patches have brought stuttering back for me. The support team recommends turning off crossplay if you are lagging. I experimented with it, and noticed a distinct difference in my performance. If you’re still having problems, check the integrity of your game files via Steam or Epic that the file has gotten corrupted during a patch is more common than you might think.
What’s Next (And Why It Matters)
The real shifts are coming October 16. Class Mod, Repkit, Shield, and Firmware tuning is on Gearbox’s hit list. And they’re fixing unintended skill interactions that’s developer-speak for “your broken build is being patched out.”
If you have to use some kind of exploit or odd combo that makes stuff itself trivial? Begin to tinker with those back up builds right away. The writing’s been on the wall, and Gearbox warned in advance for a reason.
Bottom Line
My take: Borderlands 4’s patch strategy has some respect for its players. They’re not nerfing what works they’re skybridging everybody up and then rocketing all the things that are breaking the game. Weapon buffs have weight to them, Vault Hunters are more balanced and weekly rotations make things feel fresh.
Just remain vigilant for patch warnings, don’t get rid of those weak-looking legendaries (there’s always a chance they’ll get buffed), and don’t build your endgame strategy on exploiting bugs. Because spoiler alert? That’s not lasting long.
Return on Thursdays for weekly resets and you can stay ahead of the curve.
