Hear me out, I’ve spent hundreds of hours on BL3. I imagined I knew what to expect when I booted up Borderlands 4. same old three-tree setup, some new skills, business as usual. And then I opened Vex’s skill menu and my jaw crashed to the floor.
These are not simply more voluminous skill trees. They’re a completely different beast.
The Size Gap Is Literally Insane
Here’s the thing, that bit me first: one single Borderlands 4 skill tree is bigger than an entire BL3 character playing a full progression. I’m not exaggerating. When I scrolled through that maiden tree, I went expecting the whole thing to conclude. It didn’t.
In BL3 you would pick your route, get a capstone, maybe dip in to another tree. Done. But BL4? Each tree is five full rows of nodes deep, all unlocked as you level, with a trio of different capstones at the end. Three. Per tree.
That’s nine potential capstones per character, not three. My brain’s still processing that.
Free Slotting Changed Everything
This is where it gets wild. You guys remember when if you wanted to change your action skill in bl3 was a respec and rebuild? Yeah, forget that.

In BL4, you can switch between Action Skills, Augments, and Capstones at will without even messing with your skill points. You unlock them, once, and slot them as you please. It’s like Gearbox finally realized that we wanted to experiment without having the commitment anxiety.
I got to try it during one giant boss brawl switched my capstone on the fly because I wasn’t playing well with my existing build. No menu diving, no consequences. Just pure flexibility.
Quality Of Life That Should Have Been There Years Ago
Recall clicking one skill point at a time? Tedious doesn’t even cover it. BL4 introduced something so simple I cant believe it took four games: an “Invest Maximum Points” button that automatically maxes out an entire tree all at once.
And now respeccing is free and unlimited. Free. In fact, I’ve remade my character six times in two days just because I could. No more “I hope this works” anxiety you can experiment, fail and pivot with no sunk costs.
Specializations: The Real Endgame Twist
But here’s the twist I wasn’t prepared for: after you finish killing all those bad guys and rolling through the campaign, a second progression system unlocks called Specialization. It’s not just a couple extra nodes — it’s hundreds of levels with its own tree, that includes the four core stat nodes and three prestige nodes that you require paired investment to unlock.
A Badass Ranks/skill trees amalgamation, if you will. You can even socket your special Specialization Skills that work for all of your characters account-wide. That last part? Game-changer for alt runs.
The catch? Respecs to one of those, on the other hand, will cost you Eridium rather than being free, so be smart about planning out your investments there.
How I’d Make a Transition From BL3
If you’re coming from Borderlands 3, I have absolutely clear, unassailable advice:
Levels 2-16: Don’t overthink it. Focus on your core Action Skill nodes first, then play around with augments to see what feels right. The free respec ensures you won’t really screw yourself over.
Levels 16-30: Choose one arc to push for a capstone, and hit that Invest Maximum button to blast through the tree. You’ll thank me later.
Endgame: This is where Specializations come in, begin accumulating those global stat increases as you chase challenges that aren’t level-dependent. It’s a completely different grind from the big trees.
Resources That Actually Help
I’m not going to lie these trees can be a lot to take in at first. Here’s what helped me:
If you want to theory-craft before attempting, Mobalytics has a pretty good build planner. This reddit mini-guide explains the leveling path better than any tutorial. And if you’re more of a visual learner, Arekkz Gaming’s YouTube channel has overlay builds for all the characters too.
Final Take
Having played BL3, the skill trees in Borderlands 4 feel like what the franchise has been moving towards. They’re deeper, more forgiving and so, so, so much less punishing when you want to take chances. The learning curve’s steeper, sure but once you clear that first “wait where the hell do I even begin?” hurdle, there’s really no going back.
I’m 30 hours in, still discovering new synergies. That’s the indication of a system working.
